About Geelong Montessori Education Centre @ Grovedale
Geelong Montessori Education Centre (GMEC) is a non-profit, incorporated association. We are a dedicated team who are committed
to providing a quality Montessori pre-school program for children aged 2 – 6 years.

We have a strong history in Geelong growing for over 20 years. Having relocated to Grovedale in 2001 we continue to develop plans for
future growth.

Our Location
Geelong Montessori Education Centre is set amongst the Nazareth Primary School grounds at 2 Griffith Street, Grovedale.
This peaceful, quiet and convenient location allows easy access for families from Geelong and surrounding areas.

Parent involvement
We encourage your involvement at GMEC. The staff and parent committee welcomes new parents to really become involved in our
community. We depend on the contribution and skills of families in the areas of management, fundraising, maintenance and improvements
to the centre.

What is special about the Geelong Montessori Education Centre compared to other Montessori pre-schools?

We offer a unique, friendly environment with excellent children to staff ratios. We employ specially trained Montessori staff.
Our Directress, Maree Madden has over 25 years experience in both a Montessori and regular kindergarten classroom, and is therefore
an exceptional exponent of the Montessori Method.

A Day in a Montessori Classroom
As each child arrives they are greeted at the door. The children choose an activity, while the younger children are guided in their choice
if they seem unsure. Throughout the session, new pieces of equipment are presented individually to the children. There are few
interruptions, allowing each child to be confident that any work chosen can be repeated until mastered.

The feeling of the class is calm, happy, settled and industrious. Children are free to choose where and with whom they work, and to
move around the room. An activity can be chosen after it has been shown to the child.

As the weeks and months progress the child builds up knowledge of the equipment and develops a vast range of skills. The children
may help themselves to a snack at any time throughout the sessions, having been shown how to wash their hands, sit at the snack table
and to wash up their place when they have finished.

There is time during the session for whole group activities, stories, poems, songs and the sharing of news or events in the child’s life.
There is a time of sitting together that gives the child a chance to say goodbye to their friends and the directress when their parents
arrive to take them home.
